Comment (by chdiza):

No, $trash is (and always has been) unset. (That's part of the cause of
 my surprise at the issue.)

I am doing some combination of reading and then deleting, or just deleting
obvious junk. Sometimes it's when I tag several messages prior to
deleting with "D" and then "$", and sometimes it's when I just hit "D" in
the index while on top of a message and then hit "$". Sometimes I hit
 Ctrl-D and then "$".

In all cases, as far as I can remember, "$" is the last keystroke before
 the segfault.

Sometimes I delete from my INBOX, sometimes from a "folder". Sometimes I
delete while $pager_index_lines is positive and I'm looking at the message
body plus a mini-index. Sometimes it's when I'm just in the plain old
 index.
