Does Mutt have a way to deprecate settings in such a way that their
use is reported as such to the user? If so, that seems... OK.
However if not, then all you're doing is delaying the inevitable.
Most users won't know it's deprecated until it starts complaining at
them. The "alternates" change is a good example. I AM on both lists
and follow them pretty regularly, but still managed to miss the change
until it broke for me when I upgraded. The vast majority of Mutt
users will be even less well informed. ;-)

Mostly, I think mutt-dev should not concern itself with that problem,
to be honest. It should be noted in the change log and any relevant
"Upgrading" documents, and that's it. New is new; if you want new, be
prepared to make your config new.
