I again tried using a build from the same source I'd been using previously, and I'm now seeing the same behavior there as with a build from tip. I also tried a build from the oldest source I could easily track down (1.5.21) and see the same behavior there as well. So it seems that this change is *much* older than this patch.
I have no idea how my earlier test of the older version seemed to show different behavior. Sorry for the false alarm.
