 The latter, and the distro is Fedora 4.  I have two such systems, and
 output
 of "mutt -v" is the almost the same on both:

 Your theory about the Fedora developers patching the code does seem
 plausible.

 It's probably worthwhile for me to try your patch on the systems where I
 have later versions of mutt installed.  Easiest option for me would be to
 install into a non-root user's home directory, however, and I seem to
 remember (from trying that last fall) that some supporting program
 (something to do with locking maybe?) only works if installed in a system
 directory.  If that's not a known problem I can try to provide details.
