I had the same problem, running dovecot/Maildir (the delimiter character
is a .). Applying the mutt_expand_path_ImapDelimChars.patch without any of
the other patches above fixed the issue for me. I had to change the folder
variable to append a trailing dot where the was none previously, but once
I did that, the message counts appeared correctly, showing the number of
unseen messages in each mailbox.
As a side note, I also have a patch to fix an issue with the new mailbox
list available from http://marc.info/?l=mutt-users&m=122134145330783&w=2 .
This appears to remove the need for the imap_recent patch, as the count is
of the number of unread messages in a mailbox regardless of whether it has
'new' mail or not. I am unsure of the behavior if mark_old is set on the
new mail count, but I would expect that the count would show the number of
new (not new+old) messages.
