Urgh, so you didn't really know but felt obliged to share it anyway.

No.

We have a multichannel system somewhat unlike other encodings.  There
were no patent issues.  I didn't choose our method because of any
patent issues.  I chose it because it scaled to low bitrate nicely
without mucking up any of the encoding model.

Ambisonics had nothing to do with that and is optional/compatible with
our channel encoding scheme.  

That said, Ambisonic's patents expired long ago and it's one reason
Ambisonics is an attractive surround encoding.  Full spherical,
including up/down, in four channels, decoding into between 8 to 16
speakers with speaker placement not critical like in 5.1/7.1.
