I sincerely hope that before 3.90 is promoted to beta there be a pause
to update and consolodate user documentation on the plethora of flags
and what they do and how one would use them to achieve what kind of
results, etc. Until that is done in a non-cryptic way the Lame effort
is pretty much an experimental test bed for a collaboration of
compression researchers to try things out with each other and on
cognoscenti who have followed the evolution of its options. As such it
is not particularly useful as something for people who would like to
just use it to encode MP3's. Maybe that is the intent of the effort
when all is said and done and if so I wish someone would just say that.
It is very frustrating to try and find out what Lame can do and how to
do it to just find cryptic flags that if described at all are usually
done so in jargon meaningful only to people working on it. Maybe it is
time to put your heads together and come up with a meaningful set of
public options that are easy for a humble user to grasp and relate to
things he really cares about controling, and translate them internally
to optimal settings of the esoteric ones that are currently exposed. I
know that means making value judgements that are now left as wild cards
for users to figure out by trial and error but who is better qualified
by now to do that than the developers. It also means taking off the
developer hat for a while and donning a user hat but that is almost
always a good thing to do now and then. It also probably means coming
to a consensus on some contentious issues but, hey, maybe its time to
put some of those to bed.
