That's the most important issue.
If I see "Copying message to Sent folder failed" I have no idea
why it failed or whether it's worthwhile to try it again.
If I see something like "Copying to Sent folder failed: file is read
only" then I know all I have to do is change a file permission and
try again, while "Copying to Sent folder failed: Connection refused"
tells me that it's not worth retrying, but I should call a sysadmin
about getting the server fixed.

That makes sense, but please ask first -- don't just write to a local
folder against the user's preferences without popping up a confirmation
dialog.

A reasonable approach, but aren't Sent and Drafts usually in the same
folder directory? If writing to Sent failed and mozilla won't tell
me why, I'd be suspicious of Drafts as well.

Have to agree with Ben, it's dataloss. Option (2) with a confirmation
dialog would be better (and a real error message would be better still).
