OK first problem: installing to a custom directory so had to set up environment variables. The documentation says set PYTHONPATH to PREFIX/lib/python2.X (2.5 in my case). I do this and it doesn't work (can't find package autogen). It actually needs to be set to PREFIX/lib/python2.X/site-packages. Then it works.
