Thanks for all your help. Unfortunately at the moment I'm under a bit of time pressure so I'm afraid I'm giving up for now. A .deb package would have been perfect ;-)
Also, on the Windows installer: when I try to run the installed server it crashes because it can't find the cygwin dll. The default cygwin installer does not place cygwin1.dll in the system folders but copying it across (to windows/system32) fixes the problem. Perhaps this should be indicated somewhere in the install process? I cannot imagine that many windows users would know how to solve this problem.
