My 4/4 had also spent much of its 8 years before I had it doing nothing. Rust had started under the wings - although it had been undersealed in 80s style, the stuff was coming off in sheets, revealing light surface rust beneath. If there had been any primer on those wings before they were undersealed, it came away with the underseal. I tackled this the first winter I had the car and am jolly glad I did. I stopped the rot pretty effectively and top-ups since have helped maintain the wings in pretty good shape.

I suppose my question was is it likely that I can preserve the life of the wings significantly by trying to tackle this now. I mentioned the edge issue to Kevin vernon when I first noticed it and his comment was that the die had been cast long before my ownership of the car. The car is waxoyled now and I think it had been done prior to my stewardship, but I think the car had been a bit of a garage queen in its previous life, but I don't think much preventative medicine had ever really been done - I think it had only ever been serviced when it changed hands for its first 21 years

Older wings have the edges rolled around wire. If you have corrosion coming through from the inside, there is very little you can do about it, if you failed to arrest it early on. Waxoyl is very effective at stopping corrosion (by excluding water and oxygen), but you must get things properly dried out before attempting to do so. Following on from Tims comments re wing degradation. Some views on management would be appreciated. My 4/4 is almost 24 years old with original steel wings and paint. I have noticed over the last 12 months or so some increasing bubbling along the wing edges. and there are a few chips on the front faces of the wings.

I have been using one of those touch up kits from halfords, here and there, but I wonder what longer term strategy I should employ. Is it worth (or possible) to deal just with the bubbly edges getting then smoothed out and repainted - the rest of the pain on the wings is in pretty good shape. Or should I just keep on touching up the flaky paint on the edges and replace the whole wings when they are thoroughly rotten.
