Simon,
Older wings have the edges rolled around wire. If you have corrosion coming
through from the inside, there is very little you can do about it, if you
failed to arrest it early on. Waxoyl is very effective at stopping corrosion
(by excluding water and oxygen), but you must get things properly dried out
before attempting to do so. Drying out water from inside rolled edges is no
mean feat.
My 4/4 is 24 years old, but it has had lashings of Waxoyl splashed around
under it over the years, topped up regularly. The result is that it is not
doing this. I was looking at a chum's 42 year-old 4 seater on Thursday and
he has plenty of rust coming through in the same place as yours. Rusty
though it might be, the original wings are still in place.
So, it's up to you - stay with the low-cost, temporary remedial action and
think of it as patina, or get the wings off and really do the job on them
(blast cleaning etc.), if they are otherwise still sound. If they aren't,
it's time for new wings.
Cheers,
Owen.

Subject: [mogtalk2] Wing management
Following on from Tims comments re wing degradation. Some views on
management would be appreciated. My 4/4 is almost 24 years old with
original steel wings and paint. I have noticed over the last 12 months or
so some increasing bubbling along the wing edges. and there are a few
chips on the front faces of the wings.
I have been using one of those touch up kits from halfords, here and
there, but I wonder what longer term strategy I should employ. Is it worth
(or possible) to deal just with the bubbly edges getting then smoothed out
and repainted - the rest of the pain on the wings is in pretty good
shape. Or should I just keep on touching up the flaky paint on the edges
and replace the whole wings when they are thoroughly rotten.
Cheers for thoughts
Simon
