Hi Peter, Your two photos are spot on; luckily my chassis cross-member has only surface rust that I have now dealt with and the large metal plate you pictured is in the garage having been sanded off and coated in a rust inhibiting paint.
I sprayed a generous amount of rust inhibitor down the very narrow gap between the rear cross-member and the bottom of the tank in the hope that it might help for the future.
