When poking around, since qdvdauthor has been completely unworking
today (constantly crashing, cannot say why today and not yesterday),
I saw an obsolete program (Debian Sid) in my menu called WinFF.

A front-end to ffmpeg, thinks I. Sure enough, I told it to
output "high quality NTSC DVD" and fed it the camera's original
files.

Here's the command-line, retrieved from ps:

/usr/bin/ffmpeg -i /home/curt/JVC-Video/mov01e.mpg -target ntsc-dvd -r
29.97 -s 720x480 -aspect 4:3 -b 8000k -mbd rd -flags
+trell -mv0 -cgop -cmp 2 -subcmp 2 /home/curt/October2008/mov01e.mpg

I tried dvdauthor on one of the resulting files, and it worked
perfectly. It seems I'm going to be able to bypass mplayer,
qdvdauthor and everything else and just make a vanilla auto-playing
DVD, which is all I really wanted to do in the first place.

Thank you, Mark, Bernhard, and everyone on the Mjpeg-users list. I
appreciate your help and suggestions, and your kind reception for a
confused end-user. :^)

Peace, may your aim never waver,

Curt-
