I might have had a related problem after upgrading to Suse 10.2 When I 
let xawtv use opengl to display the data I have had dropped frames. When 
I added the -nogl option things are much better.
The effect you describe doe not happen on my computer using a DC30 on a 
selfcompiled 2.6.20-1 kernel. (Never used the original suse kernel)

Please you try disabling certain extensions in xawtv, to find out if 
that exension is making problems in combination with the X.org and the 
suse kernel.
