My current computer is at least 2 years old. I still use the AMD Athlon 
MP Chipset. That works ok.

I do not remember any sucess reports with the current chipsets.

The adittional problem you have on the bus is the PCI-PCI bridge.

Than I would recomend a external box (Like the Canopus ADVC boxes) that 
works with kino
(http://www.kinodv.org) you should be able to work with that boxes with 
libquicktime, and the kino tools.
