Yep - it seems that the sound drivers are the ones that give the most
trouble when it comes to module hell.

The SB16 is an ISA card, right? I wonder if something in the ALSA
support for the SB16 has broken in the 2.6 kernel.
Do you have a PCI slot available that you could try a PCI sound card
in?

It's possible - but indicates a problem in the sound drivers. The
driver(s) should initialize the card when it's opened again.
An inexpensive PCI sound card (the Creative PCI128 or PCI512 are
good cards) might be worth a try.
