That means it's trying capture mode rather than overlay. As the FAQ mentions (or should mention, I might have forgotten to add that question), it's a hardware thing that can be solved by manual kernel patching only. But xawtv should really just try overlay, so this shouldn't be a problem. If you want to give that a shot, try googling for 'bigphysarea patch'. If you get the 'buffersize too small', then it did accept the requested (but unmentioned, because of the success) colormode. Nothing to worry about, this is how color negotiation between application and driver works.
