This sounds like a different problem.  I'm not having audio problems at all
- just the complete freezes on playback some of the time.

True.  However, at the point of transistion between the two source mpegs,
both mpegs are uniform black with no audio - all the fading has already been
done.  Even through the fading the bitrate remains modest - 3Mbps or there
abouts.  Then just at the point of transition the rate jumps very high very
briefly - more than 9Mbps for less than 0.1 seconds - before returning to
the ~<3Mbps before and during the following fadeup.

Unfortunately that wasn't practical in this situation.

I have downloaded that version and may get a chance to try it in the next
day or so.  Reading the HISTORY file doesn't indicate that anything in this
area has changed but I guess that doesn't mean much.
