Whoops! You are correct. 
Although, when I cat the y4m files,

I am sure they do. They are all converted JPEGs. They all have identical 
attributes.

Not actually. I used KHexEdit to verify what my c programme had done.

No I didn't. 
And that was my big error. 
Now, it seems to work.
