Well bit rate would make some sense here because the windows system that it 
played well was a P4-2.4 GHz.  Now as for the bitrate of the file, as I 
recall I left all the defaults.  I think it was reported as 7500 for the 
video and 224 for the audio.  The two burns I made were DVD+RW and the second 
was a DVD-R. The media may have some influence but since I am able to see 
problems with playing from the hard disk as well as the DVD's it would appear 
to be more abstract and like you stated about the way hardware players react 
to different problems.  If I need to reauthor after updating from the CVS 
then I will look into the settings to see if I can at least drop the video 
rate since images are not that important to me anyway.

How about AC3 encoding?  Is that an option here to try?  I think most 
commercial DVD's use AC3 for the audio.  At least from the few I have seen so 
far.
