Very clever.

I found something like this works fine:

sed -e "1s/Ip A0/I\? A0/" <edited.yuv | mpeg2enc ...

Rather than using a global edit, I told it only to change the first line ("1s"). According to my tests, sed seems to respect line numbers for edits. Limiting sed to the first line seems safer than doing a global edit. I would hope it would be more efficient too, but who knows what evils lurk in the heart of sed.
