Hi Steven, > I see that mpeg2enc has the option "--intra_dc_prec [9-10]" - does > that affect the calculations or does it simply set the value in the > MPEG headers? What effect, if any, does a higher dc precision have > on the picture quality?
It does affect the calculations. The quantisation of intra block's DC coefficients is changed. Setting 10 means a 10-bit precise DC coefficient is used, 9 9-bits and so on. I've never noticed any visible change in picture quality - Intra coded blocks are pretty rare anyway (and large). I strongly suspect it is just another of the many more-or-less pointless options buried in MPEG-2 that make it so unnecessarily complex. cheers, Andrerw ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program.
