Presumably you scaled before encoding :)

        Something like this?

                smil2yuv file.avi | yuvdenoise ... | y4mscaler -O
preset=VCD -S option=sinc8lan | mpeg2enc -f 1 -4 2 -2 1 -o foo.m1v

and of course mplex with "-f 1" as well.

Software players will play almost anything it seems.

Which DVD player is it? It's possible it sucks ;) Have you
tried playing VCDs made earlier? If they also have problems
the player may have developed a problem.

One of my brothers had a JVC player that claimed to play VCDs.
It choked/died (almost like yours does from the sound of it)
on discs my older portable no-name DVD player accepted just fine.
Since his player also didn't accept any of the recordable DVD
media I talked him into getting a Philips (which was on special
sale when he finally agreed his player was not that good) and
        all the problems went away.

That shouldn't make a difference. If dvgrab was able to get the
data then other than the expected suboptimal picture any VCD/DVD
made from it should work fine.

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass on pulling in VCD images ;)

Hmmm, do you have access (friends/neighbors, local store with
other players) to another player to try? That would be a good
test - if that works then your player is having the problem. If
it doesn't work then there's something awry with vcdimager
(doubtful at this stage that the mpeg2enc program has a bug that
big left in it - possible but I'd say quite unlikely). Perhaps
trying vcdimager 0.7.14 (or the CVS version) might be worth a try.

I'll try making a VCD (been a while - been making DVDs instead
for quite a while) and see if anything outside the ordinary
        happens.
