I highly recommend the Philips DVD players - so far they have
played everything including generic MPEG-2 placed on either
CD or DVD recordable (and rewriteable) media. Very inexpensive
units but have outperformed much more expensive players.

The problem I see with that approach is that SVCDs (and VCDs)
use mode 2 form 2 sectors which are larger than the 2KB sectors
that DVD media supports. I do not believe it is possible to
create DVDs using the SVCD format (that was something I wanted to
do but it does not appear as if the media or recorders support
M2F2 sectors with DVD media).
