This test helps (at least for the zoran based cards) to see if the hard
disks or controller causes any problems. If you have any other problem
like a sound card with a not to stable samplerate you see that also as
framdrops. 

How did you now measure the framedrops ?

In lavrec a framedrop is defined as: video frame that is dropped to
maintain A-V sync. Or a framedrop occures when the system isn't able to
write the frame down in a certain amount of time. And the last cause is
usually that the card misses due to a problem (bad video signal) the
frame.
