A follow up to clarify: I saw the posts from David Ellingsen. I do not have the same problem (I do use all the required flags for the mmap). However, looking at dmesg, I see something strange:
MJPEG: using 2 buffers of size 128 KB Is that buffers specifically for compressed capture, or is it allocating too little memory for my intended use? Note also that there is no notation Heartened, I tried running my code using a lower resolution. I set it to 240x180. First, VIDIOCSWIN will apparently fail on anything that isn't the full resolution of the card. Recklessly, I commented out the setting of this ioctl and ran again. What I get is a black window (ie. no data has actually been grabbed). There seems to be several issues at play here. First, apparently just making sure there is unallocated memory set at boot time seems inadequate. Um, one other thing: I am setting char-major-81 as videodev, then "above videodev zr36067" in modules.conf - I may have misunderstood some docs.
