mplex has the '-r' option: --mux-bitrate|-r num Mplex calculates the muxed rate from the input streams so normally the -r is not needed. I haven't needed to use 'r' to mplex in ages. That's normal and the correct way, as you mention, is to use time offsets within a single mpeg file.
