I am wondering if glav (or rather lavplay) applies some form of
de-interlacing algorithm before output? Can I suppress this behaviour
if it does?

The reason being, I am using glav to edit broadcast television
programming (i.e. edit out commercials) and while I am doing that I want to
(manually, visually) analyse the stream for possible inverse-telecine
processing prior to transcoding into a final viewing format. I need
to see the actual interlacing of frames to decide whether a 3:2
pulldown has been applied to the source material for broadcast on NTSC
television or not to decide whether to turn on the inverse-telecine
filter.

Thanx,
b.
