A 30GB partition from each drive is striped together as /dev/md0, and
there are no other drives on this Promise ATA-100 controller.  The
machine's CDR drive is on the motherboard's onboard ATA-33 controller.

(The machine has 384MB of RAM, so a 512MB test should be adequate to
eliminate cache effects.)  The machine (dual P2/266) was also ripping
CDs, encoding OGGs, and playing (different) OGGs while I was testing.  I
generally capture with -d2 and -q50, and with nothing else going on, so
I shouldn't be getting anywhere near the write transfer limit.
