Sorry if I asked you that already, I can't remember. Are you using xdm? If so did you disable the getty(8) attached to the console in /etc/ttys? There's a known problem on machines without virtual consoles that cause the getty process and X server to fight to get data from the console, causing the symptoms you describe. -- Matthieu Herrb
