Might just be me, but I hate CUPS.  Try foomatic-rip together with
the appropriate PPD and set up your /etc/printcap.  Here's mine for
a hp LaserJet 1010

   $ cat /etc/printcap
   lp|LaserJet:\
      :lp=/dev/ulpt0:\
      :af=/etc/foomatic/HP-LaserJet_1010-hpijs.ppd:\
      :if=/usr/local/bin/foomatic-rip:\
      :sd=/var/spool/output:\
      :lf=/var/log/lpd-errs:\
      :sh:
