Might just be me, but I hate CUPS. Try foomatic-rip together with
the appropriate PPD and set up your /etc/printcap. Here's mine for
a hp LaserJet 1010
$ cat /etc/printcap
lp|LaserJet:\

:af=/etc/foomatic/HP-LaserJet_1010-hpijs.ppd:\
