That sounds like you are doing something wrong. And then you come whining here because you do not know how to write to a disk? The object o9f the game is to find ways to do stuff quickly and efficiently, not to find assorted contraptions that work slowly and inefficiently. If it's speed you really want, dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/whatever seems to write to disks pretty quickly.
