you were right there is is a bug in tightvnc on amd64. I have setup a new machine i386 and everything worked like expected right out of the box. It was not even neccessary to set the environment variable $DISPLAY nor to experiment with xhost or xauth. Thanks for the answer again. It cost me a lot of time and I almost thought that I was to stupid to get the problem solved. Thanks again for your hint. Harry
