thanks for reply.

I did:

showrgb > /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb

Permissions of file rgb are:
root:wheel 644
however, I still have the same line in the log file

What do you mean with that.
On my Linux systems I can open almost as many displays as I want.
vncserver :<n>

The normal KDE display seems to be :0
after starting vncserver :1 in /tmp I find
-r--r--r-- 1 _x11 _x11 11 Mar 5 09:20 .X0-lock
drwxrwxrwt 2 root wheel 512 Mar 5 09:24 .X11-unix

there is no .X1-lock, presumably because the start of vncserver failed.

in /tmp/.X11-unix I find
srwxrwxrwx 1 _x11 wheel 0 Mar 5 09:20 X0
srwxrwxrwx 1 harry wheel 0 Mar 5 09:24 X1

Connection to display :0 is refused. An I don4t want to connect to an already
open display. I want to start a new instance of vncserver to connect to the
machine even if nobody is already working on it, just as I can do on my
Linux machines.
I have already compared the contents of .Xauthority files on both systems and
cannot find any difference.
