I have been using a comparable setup for years. Using a version control
system for the task is doable, but in my opinion somewhat cumbersome to use
in daily basis, especially if the data contains large files. While there are
special tools like unison, I have settled down with rsync and ssh. Easy to
use and maintain, but not a replacement for backups.
