That's exactly what happened actually. I noticed (what I considered) a suprisingly high "load average" for a server with this specification and started investigating. The server is a syslog server that I'm preparing. It's running syslog-ng and both MySQL and Postgres (neither are used at the moment) and exporting a filesystem (the logs) via NFS. There's a perl "logwatch" script that is constantly tailing all the log files (20,545,009 log lines per day) and if I kill that, the load drops significantly (down to 0.4 or so). So that's obviously causing the "high" load average. The business end of the script forks and runs "gtail -f" on about 5 log files in the parent and does pattern matching in the child to notify us of unusual events. > The *stat tools and top > quickly show what's happening, and it usually just means something's > actually doing something on an otherwise quiet box. Good! In this case, top shows the system is idling and there's the rub. I've been conditioned to seeing long term load averages above 1 as a "bad thing" that needs investigating and dealing with. I'm now comfortable that (in this case at least), it's caused by a script that is sleeping or idle most of the time ("top -I" rarely shows this process or any other for that matter :-). I guess I just need to adjust my expectations. Thanks again for the help folks!
