The compatibility list at http://www.openbsd.org/i386.html says this about aac(4): Adaptec FSA-based RAID controllers (aac), including: (*) Note: In the past year Adaptec has lied to us repeatedly about forthcoming documentation so that RAID support for these (rather buggy) raid controllers could be stabilized, improved, and managed. As a result, we do not recommend the Adaptec cards for use. ... (*) Support for devices marked with (*) is not included on the distribution media or in the GENERIC kernel, and will require you to compile a custom kernel to enable it. > As far as the card and hard drives go, they still seem usable as CentOS 3.4 > and Ubuntu 6.0.6.1 will install with no problems, so I'm leaning away from > hardware failure. If you get the right combination of BIOS and driver, it mostly works, but get it wrong and you can have sporadic lockups on whichever OS you use it with. Do a bunch of testing before using it for anything where this might be a problem...(istr with the 'good' BIOS you might still get occasional periods where it freezes for a bit, but does come back in the end). Things are better with an ebay'd ami(4) (PERC3/SC, PERC3/DC, etc) which shouldn't be too expensive or hard to find, are supported by GENERIC, and work with bioctl/sensorsd.
