IPv6 link-local (which doesn't need any configuration, it's enabled by default) can be a useful backup to have in the event of accidentally breaking IPv4 (missing 'alias' to ifconfig(8) is always a favourite). You can easily locate other hosts on the segment with the handy 'ping6 -w ff02::1%sk0' (where sk0 is the interface name) that Brad mentioned in relation to testing multicast..
