Thank you very much, I will enable ACPI and try to understand what this vmstat 
-i is telling me -- I am not very knowledgeable about hardware. Because I 
sent the initial message by mistake to ports@, copy of this reply is going to

I did not see anything unusual with top -- most of the time is being taken by 
cc1. 

I will try each of the suggestions from others as well -- MFS, softdep, using 
bsd.mp, etc. and see if that improves anything substantially and report back 
to the list.
