        Just another vote for this. having recently done this on a bunch of
machines. I used to always blow everything away and start over, but pkg_add -u
seems to do the trick most of the time. Usually when it doesn't it appears
to be because the port is boned, not the pkg_* tools.

        you really do NOT need to blow away all your packages anymore
on an upgrade. learn how to use -u. By the time you see it pulling off
upgrades of bloatware like blender and kde stuff you'll be impressed.
