The Drupal forums kind of suck. They are ok if you just want a very minimalist forum. I tried to get my wife's site on drupal but she hated it so I grudgingly moved to phpBB. So far though, I've been very impressed with phpbb. I'm just running it on my home cable connection on an old ultra 10 using postgresql. The server is in my garage and you have to go over 2 (count 'em TWO) wireless routers to get to it (no ethernet out there). Yet it still feels pretty fast.[1] Also, it's really easy to administer. My wife does most of the work on it and only periodically asks me to tweak something where tweaking is needed, I don't even have an account. I know there's been a couple of security issues in the past, but I've patched more bind, and apache installs than I've had to patch phpbb. Just sign up for the security announce mailing list and you will be fine running phpbb. Patch when there's a patch, just like anything else.
