Yes, though I now know QoS can be set in sshd directly. Indeed, specifying <<IPQoS lowdelay throughput>> in sshd_config made the problem immediately disappear. I could induce it 100% of the time by simulating traffic congestion (e.g. streaming a video in the background whilst ssh was running). Debian patching alternate defaults into sshd as opposed to changing the default sshd_config they ship is like wallpapering over mould on a wall. It may solve the problem in the immediate future, but really concealed a problem festering elsewhere in my network. Thank you for the inputs. Regards Lloyd
