Once you hit a key on the keyboard, you've stopped the timeout. If you're typing on the keyboard, you can just type "boot" (or just "b") to boot it. You don't need a timeout. If you put your com0 settings (or whatever else) into boot.conf, then you don't need to type anything and the timeout applies and it'll boot on its own.
