Back when I was on pppoe, after a quick reboot I used to get some messages like "connection it is already in XXX state" or so, I don;t really remember the exact message. Once it was impossible to get rid of that and connect again, so I was calling my ISP to fix that. They confirmed it was a stray connection or so. I've put 'ifconfig pppoe0 down' in rc.shutdown as a countermeasure.
