sort -R behaves the same way as GNU's coreutils: http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/sort.1.html Note that the sort command was imported from FreeBSD a while ago. It mimicks various aspects of the GNU version. I have no idea why anyone would want this particular behavior, but it is what it is.
