No really, run one, in a controlled environment, in the wild, learn all
aspects to it, be prepared to learn a lot more than you bargained for,
become a skilled professional and don't be discouraged by pessimistic
views.

Read manuals, books, specs, standards, history, languages.  It's worth
it.  OpenBSD is a great companion in this.  And so is Unix as a whole.
