I'm from FreeBSD land, but I can give you some links:

In general people say that Atheros chips are the best supported (use
the ath driver).
However, there was recently a change in the ath driver that really
pisses me off.  Many people have this problem and there is no known
robust way to fix the problem.  The problem can be explained here:

When you end up choosing a miniPCI wireless card I'd like to know
about it, and how well it works, because I'm thinking of building a
mini router much like you have.
