Start at the top of FAQ 5. Read and understand 5.1 and 5.2 carefully and more-or-less completely, there's a test that follows. 5.3 is the test. Follow the instructions properly, and -stable just works. The totally unimportant step you modified because you think it doesn't matter or you think you know better than us is the one that broke things. Trust me when I say that -stable builds.
