its off topic, but have my 2 cents anyways: 
- as already mentioned, the netgear-switches have a very good 
price/performance-ratio. don't expect peak performance,  also under load
they do get warm, and lock up once in a while. but for soho-use they are
quite buyable
- it is the same with level-1devices: quite reliable, if not constantly under
heavy load, a bit smaller than the netgear ones, but with plastic casing
- if a small netgear switch gets warm, a d-link switch will get hot
- you can buy expensive brands like hp, intel etc. but don't expect the 
quality of the equipment to be higher. it might be.
